The Thrill and Trembling of Public Speaking!
Our next meeting will take place on the 9th of April at 7pm. Come along and have a taste of what Toastmasters is all about, see how you can enhance your communication, listening and leadership skills and most importantly, have fun doing it!
Our theme for the evening will be the double edged sword of public speaking. Public speaking is the number one fear of many but is tremendously personally rewarding. Each speech or presentation is formidable but can bring much good to the audience. It’s a great way to share important things with other people. At this meeting we’ll be discussing the two edges of speaking and hoping to nurture growth in our members and our guests.

Cogito’s International Speech and Evaluation Contest
Cogito’s Club Level International Speech and
Evaluation Contest is taking place on
Tuesday, March 12th.
This is the preliminary stage in a contest that will go all the way to the Riviera Renaissance in Torquay – Toastmasters Spring Conference – and then to the International event.
Competitors in the International Speech Contest can compete against other speakers around the world to become the World Champion of Public Speaking. Winning speakers compete at Club, Area, District, Division and finally International levels.
In the Evaluation Contest a speech is given by a “Test Speaker” or “Presenter”, and contestants give a verbal evaluation, just as if they were fulfilling the meeting role of Evaluator. Each contestant gives their evaluation without being able to hear any of the other contestants, has a limited time to prepare their evaluation, and must give their evaluation without the use of notes.
More information about what the contest is all about can be found at Toastmasters Wiki.
We will be meeting in Polish House at 20 Fitzwilliam Place, Dublin 2. It’ll be a thrilling night that will show how Toastmasters constructively coaches its members by recognising their achievements and recommending improvements in their public speaking technique. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Think of it as a great night of storytelling, a magical night where any member can take part. It’s a fantastic chance to practice your storytelling skills and a brilliant opportunity to grow more confident and fluid as a speaker.
We’d love to hear your tall tale, let Dermot or Florence know if you’d like to give it a try.
So what exactly is a Tall Tale?
A tall tale is a story with unbelievable elements, told as if it were true and factual. They can be exaggerations of actual events, for example fish stories (‘the fish that got away’) such as, “that fish was so big, why I tell ya’, it nearly sank the boat when I pulled it in!”
Tall tales are often told where either you or someone you know (a friend, relative, family member etc) are the main character in the story. The main component of a tall tale is exaggeration.
You usually start with something small and ordinary like going for a walk or making dinner but then something happens, possibly something small but it can set off a chain of events that snowball until the story has expanded beyond the small opening and brought you to a place that you could never have predicted. That is the magic of a tall tale.
To find out more about tall tales, here’s an article from the Toastmasters magazine.

Looking forward to seeing you there. Same Cogito time, same Cogito place!
